OVERVIEW
Achieving UHC is a fundamental objective of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aimed at enhancing global health and well-being. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) (2012), UHC ensures that all individuals have access to a comprehensive range of quality healthcare services without incurring financial hardship. This encompasses the entire spectrum of essential health services, including health promotion, disease prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care throughout their life. The WHO targets an additional 1 billion people who will benefit from UHC by 2025. This special issue explores the progress, challenges, and future directions of UHC in the African context. We encourage contributions that examine both the theoretical and practical aspects of UHC, including but not limited to the following topics:
- Digital and Technology in Health: Digital health and innovation as UHC accelerators.
- Building Resilient Health Systems for UHC:
- Reflecting on how health systems can be made more resilient to ensure continuous health coverage during crises such as pandemics.
- Access to medicines and drugs: Improving access to essential medicine and medical products.
- Health in all policies: promoting equity and reaching the unreached.
- Patient-Centered Care and Health Equity:
- Exploring ways to incorporate patient-centered approaches in UHC to improve patient satisfaction and outcomes.
- Analysing the impact of UHC on reducing health disparities among different population groups.
- Progress on UHC:
Reporting on the progress made by African countries in addressing the key UHC priorities.
- Global Experiences and Human Resources for Health:
Reflecting on various UHC models from different countries reporting on partnerships and sustainable investments in workforce and systems development.
