Postcolonial Disillusionment and Moral Decay: A Critical Study of Socio-political Decadence in Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s Works

Abstract

This article examines the portrayal of dystopia in post-colonial Kenya as depicted in Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s Matigari and I Will Marry When I Want. Across his post-independence oeuvre, Ngũgĩ foregrounds the shattered aspirations of citizens following liberation, exposing the persistent and regressive repression exercised by postcolonial African leaders. The work identifies the debilitating grip of neocolonialism on nations such as Kenya, with Ngũgĩ’s incisive critique of these neo-imperial tendencies prominently articulated in the two texts. Through the voices of the marginalised—impoverished individuals whose hopes were betrayed by systemic looting and corruption at independence—Ngũgĩ advances a powerful decolonisation agenda. The eponymic Matigari, portrayed as a truth-seeker endowed with almost magical powers, alongside the indigent Kiguunda, embodies the critical voice of the moral bankruptcy of the post-liberation ruling elite. Ngũgĩ’s deliberate invocation of terms like “imperialism” and “neocolonialism” underscores the urgent need to reassess Kenya’s quasi-independence. The paper aims to highlight and lay bare the challenges of misgovernance across the African continent and, ultimately, to propose ways of avoiding poor governance. Employing Marxist literary criticism, the paper seeks to trace and substantiate Ngũgĩ's vision of a dystopian Kenya, manifested through subversive agrarian reform, endemic corruption, neo-hegemonic practices, and profound moral decay.
