Abstract
In March 2015, the Nigerian jihadist group popularly known as Boko Haram pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (also known as ISIS and ISIL). Boko Haram has existed in various forms in northeastern Nigeria and its environs since the early 2000s. The group became notorious after its mass uprising in 2009, and particularly after its kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls from the town of Chibok in 2014.
