The Missionary Institute of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa: Origin, Development, and Function

Abstract

The Missionary Institute of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) in South Africa, founded in 1877 in Wellington, played a unique role in the theological training of brown and black ministers. This article examines the origin, development, and function of the Missionary Institute within the broader context of the Dutch Reformed Church’s missionary and theological policy, with a specific focus on its relationship with the Theological Seminary of Stellenbosch. The analysis shows how the Mission Institute was both a space of practical empowerment and a symbol of canon and academic segregation. The article discusses the critical tension between academic and pragmatic training, authority, and calling, and its impact on the Dutch Reformed Church’s missionary communities. The history of the Missionary Institute provides a lens through which to understand the Church’s engagement with inequality, colonial influences, and the struggle for inclusivity, and forms a starting point for contemporary conversations about theological training and missional calling in South Africa. The article seeks not only a descriptive history, but a critical interpretation of the Missionary Institute’s function and legacy. Considering contemporary conversations about decolonial theology and inclusive theological training, the Mission Institute provides an important historical lens through which to rethink the DRC’s engagement with inequality and its role in the formation of missional identities. The article argues that the Mission Institute was at once a space of empowerment and a space of limitation, an institution that shaped the calling of many students, but which was also embedded in structures of inequality.
