This article examines the Reverends Sibongile Jessie Mhlophe and Fanyana Peter Mhlophe as exemplars of grassroots ecumenical heroism in South African church history. Drawing on biographical material, oral narratives, and pastoral practice, it argues that their ministry embodied an ecumenical vision through everyday practices, including shared worship, interdenominational cooperation, social engagement, and prophetic witness, rather than through formal institutional structures. Challenging elite-centred accounts of ecumenism, the study shows how unity was enacted amid apartheid’s violence, poverty, and marginalisation. It proposes ecumenical heroism from below as a relational, embodied, and locally grounded framework that contributes to church history and ecumenical studies by rethinking Christian unity, leadership, and sanctity in contexts of struggle.
