About the Journal
Focus and Scope
CILSA is devoted to comparative and international law, with particular reference to the Southern African context. Each edition contains approximately five full-length, in-depth articles by Southern African, African and international authorities, covering a wide range of topics from both international and comparative perspectives.
CILSA aims to provide a platform for academics and intellectuals to discuss developments in the fields of comparative law, international law, legal practice, and in the statutory, case and treaty law of the states of southern Africa, Africa and other countries. CILSA welcomes contributions dealing with topics involving the legal aspects of regional co-operation in Southern Africa, and of the trade and other external relationships between the countries of Southern Africa, Africa and other countries abroad; African customary law in southern Africa, and contributions aimed at stimulating intellectual exchanges between jurists of the world.
CILSA is a double blind peer-reviewed journal, published three times a year (March, July and November), CILSA is an internationally accredited (IBSS) journal.
Editorial Policy
Contributions that have been published in part on in whole elsewhere or sent for consideration elsewhere will not be processed.
Contributions are subject to a plagiarism check using iThenticate.
The journal will not publish submissions by the same author in consecutive volumes. Should the author still wish to submit, a 1-year waiting period will apply before the article can be considered for publication.
The final decision to publish contributions reside with the editor. In case of a dispute, authors may approach the Chair of the Editorial Board.
Editors reserve the right to make changes to copy:
- according to house style,
- to ensure clean and clear copy free of grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax and idiomatic errors,
- to produce accuracy, coherence and clarity, and
- to avoid possible liability.
The editors are committed to ethical research and publication practices as well as maintaining the integrity of the journal, and therefore follow the COPE guidelines.
Peer Review Process
CILSA adopts a double-blind peer-review process whereby all submissions are submitted to an independent review process to guarantee impartiality and to ensure focus on the quality of the submissions. All articles submitted to the journal are peer-reviewed by independent reviewers.
The final decision in the case of a dispute between reviewers lies with the editors (who may opt to engage a third reviewer), although in all cases an attempt is made to reach consensus between reviewers.
Journal History
The Comparative and International Law Journal of Southern Africa (CILSA) was established in 1968 and was published by The Centre for Foreign and Comparative Law at the University of South Africa until 2017. From 2018 the journal is housed in the Department of Public, Constitutional and International Law at the University of South Africa.
