African Masculinity in Crisis: A Social and Theological Reflection on Poverty and Climate Change

Abstract

This article critically examines the crisis of African masculinity in the face of escalating poverty and climate change through a combined social and theological lens. It interrogates how traditional constructs of masculinity—shaped by cultural norms, religious narratives, and social structures—are being challenged and reshaped under the weight of environmental degradation and economic marginalisation. As male identities tied to provision, protection, and authority become increasingly unstable, new forms of vulnerability and existential dislocation are emerging. The study is anchored on three complementary theoretical frameworks, namely: African theological anthropology, liberation theology, and critical masculinity studies. These frameworks enable a deconstruction of hegemonic masculinities and offer a constructive path towards relational, inclusive, and justice-oriented masculinities within African contexts. Methodologically, a qualitative approach is employed, incorporating contextual analysis and theological reflection to explore particularities of communities directly impacted by poverty and climate-related challenges. This interdisciplinary engagement seeks to contribute to the reimagining of African masculinity in ways that promote personal dignity, community resilience, and ecological responsibility. The article argues for a transformative vision of masculinity that is both theologically rooted and socially responsive.
