Appellate Committee of the House of Lords

Abstract

In 2003 it was announced that a Supreme Court would replace the Appellate Committee of the House of Lords. This transpired in 2009 and saw the end of the House of Lords acting in the specific judicial capacity as the final court of appeal for the United Kingdom. The other judicial committee of 1 the House of Lords, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, continues to function. For all practical purposes the Supreme Court continues to exercise the same jurisdiction as its predecessor. There is merely a change of name and a change of venue. The Supreme Court is to be headed by a President who was named as Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers.
