In the winter of 1944, approximately five months before the Allied forces launched their invasion at Normandy, three-term United States President Franklin D Roosevelt delivered his annual State of the Union Address. Given the unparalleled instability wrought by World War II, Roosevelt’s immediate focus was on the topic of national security, and in his speech that night to the American people, the President outlined his plan for ‘lasting peace’.
