Abstract

In the study, we aimed to explore the perceptions of children with disabilities of sport and recreation activities in a resource-poor community in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. We used an explorative descriptive phenomenological qualitative approach and had a focus-group discussion with five children with disabilities. The data were transcribed verbatim and then analysed thematically using content analysis. The discussions with the children revealed three themes, namely, barriers to participation in sport and recreation in the community; facilitators to participation in sport and recreation in the community, and recommendations for the uptake of sport and recreation in communities. Poor sports infrastructure and a lack of resources posed challenges to children participating in sport and recreation activities in their communities. The children with disabilities who were interviewed in the study believed that there is a need for improved governance to facilitate their inclusion in sport and recreation programmes in South African communities. They also emphasised that their inclusion in sport and recreation programmes demands improved awareness in their communities.
