Postmodernist Narrative Strategies in Foe

Abstract

It is argued in this paper that Coetzee's notion of narrativity necessitates an analysis of the interarticulation between contemporary theoretical discourses and narrative practice. Since calculated construction seems to inform his re-writing and re-contextualization of romantic tales of adventure, Genette's structuralist model is used as a framework for tracing Coetzee's unique exploitation of postmodernist narrative strategies via the seg­mentation of his text into four different parts.

Daar word in hierdie referaat uitgegaan van die veronderstelling dat Coetzee se opvatting van narratiwiteit 'n analise van die interartikulasie van kontemporere teoretiese diskoerse en narratiewe praktyk noodsaak. Aangesien berekende konstruksie blykbaar sy her-skryf en her-kontekstualisering van romantiese avontuurverhale onderle, word Genette se strukturalistiese model as raamwerk gebruik vir 'n analise van Coetzee se unieke eksploitasie van postmodernistiese narratiewe strategiee via die segmentering van sy teks in vier verskillende dele.
