"Wegwysers" in Kamas uit 'n bamboesstok
Abstract
In Afrikaans literature D.J. Opperman is famous as writer of the "objective" poem with which he moved away from the very personal "confession cult" of the early thirties. However, his Kamas uit 'n bamboesstokdeals with very personal experiences. This article investigates the techniques Opperman applied to enable him to write about his experiences during his serious illness without becoming sentimental or self-centred. The implications this aim had for the use of intertexts, the relationship between the lyrical I and the real poet, the narrative and dramatic set-up of certain poems, the "objective speaker", the use of metaphor, self derision, playfulness and enumeration are discussed.

In die Afrikaanse letterkunde is D.J. Opperman by uitstek bekend as die beoefenaar van die gestaltegedig waarmee hy wegbeweeg het van die alte persoonlike belydeniskultus van die vroee dertigerjare. En tog handel sy bundel Komas uit 'n bamboesstok oor die allerpersoonlikste ervarings. In hierdie artikel word nagegaan hoe Opperman te werk gegaan het om oor die belewenisse tydens sy siekte te skryf sender om in sentimentele uitweidings en selfgesentreerdheid te verval. Naas die reeds bekende gebruik van intertekste, word ook ingegaan op die implikasies wat hierdie strewe gehad het vir die hantering van ander aspekte soos die verhouding tussen liriese subjek en konkrete digter, die narratiewe en dramatiese opset van sommige gedigte, die "objektiewe spreker", metaforisering, selfspot en speelsheid, die taalhantering en enumerasie.
