"Reading and Interpretation": The New English IA Course, Department of English, University of Natal, Durban

Abstract

This article examines a new first year course, "Reading and Interpretation" devised by the Department of English at the University of Natal, Durban. The course represents an attempt to assimilate the influence of theory on English studies into teaching methodology and course design. Particular attention is paid to the expansion of analysis beyond the traditional generic boundaries, as well as the changing composition of the student body.

In hierdie artikel word die nuwe eerstejaarkursus, "Reading and Interpretation", soos ontwerp deur die Departement Engels van die Universiteit van Natal, Durban, bespreek. Die kursus verteenwoordig 'n paging om die invloed van teorie op literatuursludie le assimileer - veral die wyse waarop dit die fokus van literatuurstudie verbreed het en 'n hersiening van onderrigmetodologie nodig gemaak he!. Spesiale aandag word gewy aan die uitbreiding van analise buite die tradisionele grense van genres. Die kursus verteen­woordig ook 'n paging om le reageer op die veranderende studentesamestelling.

Author Biography

Matthew Shum, University of KwaZulu-Natal

Matthew Shum is the Academic Support tutor in the English Department at Durban. His interests are in devising teaching material for second language students and in teaching methodology in this area. He has also produced a grammar handbook for second language students based on an analysis of typical errors. His literary interests are in culture and imperialism, with specific reference to the early South African novel.
