Identity and Difference: Some Nine­ teenth and Early Twentieth Century South African Texts

Abstract

This paper explores constructs of identity and difference in various South African texts of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by relating these texts to the development of print, economic transformations and historical events. Investigating constructs of identity and difference is important because of the emphasis placed on these constructs by the discourse of apartheid.

Hierdie artikel ondersoek konstruksies van identiteit en verskil in verskeie Suid-Afrikaanse tekste van die negentiende en vroeë twintigste eeu deur dit in verband te bring met die ontwikkeling van die drukkuns, ekonomiese omwentelinge en historiese gebeure. Die ondersoek van hierdie konstruksies is belangrik vanwee die klem wat in die diskoers van apartheid daarop geplaas is.
