Literere geskiedskrywing en/as persoonlike perspektief

Abstract

This essay reflects the verbal report on the progress in writing of a new Afrikaans literary history, given at a SAVAL miniconference on literary historiography during March 1993. The author was asked to contribute a survey of twentieth-century Afrikaans prose works for the completely revised edition of a well-known text, Per­spektief en profiel. Taking into consideration the ongoing debate about the nature and limitations of and expectations for a history of literature in a multicultural and multilinguistic South Africa, the theoretical and actual framework chosen and drawn up for this specific project is discussed. The placing of Afrikaans literature within the larger system of South African cultural expression and the interpretation of the literary text as an integral part of socio-political reality characterise the author's approach to the writing of the new text. Problems concerning canonisation of texts, authors and literary periods are discussed. The fact that the final product should be seen as only one perspective on subjectively selected literary events, a perspective that should be continuously revised through new academic publications, individual studies by post­graduate students and reappraisals by other readers, is stressed.

In hierdie beskouing word verslag gedoen oor die skryf van 'n Afrikaanse literatuurge­skiedenis, die geheel hersiene nuwe uitgawe van Perspektief en Profiel waartoe die skrywer die afdeling oor die Afrikaanse prosa van die twintigste eeu bygedra het. As deel van die deurlopende debat omtrent die beperkinge van en verwagtinge vir 'n literatuurgeskiedenis binne 'n multikulturele en multitalige Suid-Afrika, word die keuses ten opsigte van 'n teoretiese en praktiese raamwerk vir hierdie spesifieke onderneming bespreek. Die outeur se benadering was om die Afrikaanse letterkunde binne die groter Suid-Afrikaanse literêre sisteem te plaas en om die teks as integrale deel van die sosiopolitieke werklikheid te interpreteer. Probleme betreffende kanonisering van outeurs, tekste en tendense word bespreek. Die finale produk moet beoordeel word as slegs een perspektief op 'n subjektiewe seleksie van literêre gegewens, 'n perspektief wat voortdurend hersien kan word met die verskyning van nuwe navorsing en nuwe lesers.
