The Politics of Literary Historiography

Abstract

This article gives a critical overview of the development of literary historiography, "hard-pressed between literature and history proper". It stresses the catalytic impact of realism on historiographic discourse and suggests a blueprint for 'postmodern realism'.

Hierdie artikel gee 'n kritiese oorsig oor die ontwikkeling van literêre historiografie, "vasgevang tussen letterkunde en 'suiwer' geskiedenis". Dit beklemtoon die katalise­rende effek van realisme op historiografiese diskoers en suggereer 'n bloudruk vir "postmoderne realisme".

Author Biography

William H. Thornton , National Cheng Kung University

William Thornton is an associate professor at the National Chung Kung University in Tainan, Taiwan, where he teaches post-modern literature, literary theory, and cultural studies. He has widely published in the areas of postmodern literary historiography and cultural theory and is currently doing a co-authored series of articles on East Asian post-coloniality.
